Bates traces its roots back to the Cooper, Harris and Vella Families.

The Bates property is part of the historic Cooper Harris Ranch that dates back to the mid-1800s.

Tom Vella, who established the Vella Cheese Company, purchased the property from the Bates family in the 1930s. He leased it to the Larson family who established a dairy there and the Leveroni family who grew hay on the land.

The Sangiacomo family has leased the property from the Vella family since 1999. Grapes were first planted there in 1999.

Bates Vineyard was first planted to grapes by the Sangiacomo family in 1999, with more than ten clone and rootstock combinations. Felder Creek runs through the middle of the vineyard while Fowler Creek runs on the east side. The vineyard is planted entirely to Chardonnay.
