Sangiacomo Family Vineyards' 23rd Annual Chardonnay Tasting
by Eric Stern
One of the most cliched phrases in all of winemaking - that wine is made in the vineyard - was emphatically demonstrated at the 23rd annual Sangiacomo Chardonnay tasting on March 24 at Ramekins, a culinary school and inn in Sonoma. The long history of this tasting reflects the naivete and can-do, eclectic, experimental and evolutionary trends that have so marked the past 20-plus years of California's permium wine industry.

Neyers Vineyard El Novillero Vineyard Chardonnay (Carneros) 2009 94 points | $42 | White
The 2009 Chardonnay El Novillero Vineyard reminds me of some of the glory days of Louis Latour's Corton-Charlemagne. Smoky bacon fat, poached pear, honeysuckle, peach and earth all combine in a full-bodied , minerally, yet authortatively flavored Chardonnay that is part California and seemingly part French. This beauty, from a cool-climate vineyard, is just that loaded. Drink it over the the next 5-6 years.

Sojourn Cellars Sangiacomo Vineyard Pinot Noir (Sonoma Coast) 2009 91 points | $48 | Red
From a well-known, even iconic site for Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, the 2009 Pinot Noir Sangiacomo Vineyard comes from Dijon clones 115 and 777. The color is similar to the other Pinot Noirs, dark ruby with some lightening at the edge. With pure cherry and raspberry notes as well as hints of herbs and loamy soil, the wine is medium to full-bodied, not as open or expressive as his previous three offerings, but deep and impressively built, with outstanding concentration and flavor authority. It has crisp acidity and should drink nicely for at least 5-6 years. It could benefit from another 6 months of bottle age.

Sojourn Sangiacomo Vineyard Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir 2009 97 points | $48 | Red
Medium-deep ruby color; depp, complex, spicy stewed aromas; big, ripe, stewed dark cherry falvors; very complex, earthy, spice notes; silky texture; great structure and balance; long finish. Incredibly complex Pinot with laser-focused flavors. Needs a ton of time, but I love it right now. $48
